ANA 787 makes emergency landing after smoke appears in cabin.

UPDATE 2: Report now that Japan Airlines is temporarily grounding all 787s as well.

UPDATE: ANA has told the local Japanese media NHK that they are grounding all 17 787s for inspection.  The report of smoke is as of yet unconfirmed but the aicraft is questions is ZA102 (LN 9, JA804A) which was delivered on January 14, 2012 (exactly a year ago) and first flew on January 19, 2011.

Reports are coming out of Japan of another 787 incident this time there was smoke in cabin while the aircraft was in flight and lead to an emergency landing in Takamatsu in Western Japan.  The passengers evacuated via deployed emergency slides.  There is an unconfirmed report that cockpit indicators showed a battery failure. It is unknown which aircraft it was or when it was delivered.

There is a further unconfirmed report that ANA has ordered all 787 grounded for emergency inspections.  I'll update this story as more information becomes known.

And off to a rough start :(!! Lets hope the worst of the FAA report is that further testing of electrical systems to occur. I still believe it is Airbus paying people off though

Haven't 787s been in service for a while now? Why are these incidents suddenly happening in rapid succession now...?

There is a theme on the electrical issues on the 787. Speculation is futile but having an older (1 year old) and newer aircraft just a months having systemic battery is a serious problem. The timing of all at once is curious. Was there a recent power upgrade implemented of its electrical system? That would cause new and old aircraft to fault at the same time. You would think a year old aircraft would not smoke out at the same time of a new one unless there is a common thread for the problem just introduced in the last 60 days.

It was JA804A.
JAL have also grounded all their 787s pending inspection.

The media will be going to town on this one. Boeing is getting slammed in everyway possible and it will now start to have an impact on Boeing and the 787. Everyone in the aviation/travel industry can separate and judge the minor issues from the possible more serious ones, however the way media report details and twisting or leaving off certain details the joe blogs who dont know enough about the industry and only goes by what is in the paper is painting a very grim report on Boeing and flying the 787. ie read an article saying they have grounded all 787's, leaving the word temporarily out or mentioning ANA and JAL did this on their own accord.

To make things perhaps worse both Japan airlines grounding their fleet for inspections. They and Boeing must exactly know what the problem was or else how are they to know what to expect, another battery issue??I think its more than that, or if it is that, what is causing the batteries to over heat? or is everything wired wrong.

I can only hope that what the FAA and Boeing find is nothing, anything more and the media with have a freenzy on it no matter how small the change might be. I also hope Qatar's 787 are perfect!!! who knows what they might do if theres a problem, fly them all back and dump them at Paine Field.
I do feel things at Boeing may not get any better for some time due to the lack of progress in talks with SPEEA and it will end up with strike action.

Last word to Andrew, re Airbus comment, as much as I dont like Airbus but really??? thats a bit far fetched to think they have something to do with this all. Airbus will only be sitting and grinning from ear to ear and watching from the sidelines rubbing there hands seeing the headlines and thinking 2013 could not have gotten off to a better start in terms of competition no matter what the state of the A350 program is in.

nskiwi, I'm not so sure this will effect sales or the program at all. Infact, i'm sure this will be forgotten in two weeks if nothing else happens. The uncontained engine failure of the A380 was way worse than this and it diden't really effect sales or the public's perception of the plane at all.

Flight aware has an ANA flight listed as I type this. Could this be an error on Flight Aware?

The NTSB released pictures of the burned out battery from the Boston incident:

Hmm... In the reuters passenger evac video several of the seat back entertainment screens are rebooting. Did a serious power glitch happen during the event? That raises questions about cascading failures beyond the battery.

If the FAA decides that lithium batteries aren't safe, is there an alternative battery that Boeing could used on the 787 instead?

completely grounded by FAA. News just broke.

ANA website shows 2 flights: 203 and 531 are in air at the time Im writing this. (domestic 787s show as '787' not '788' in Flightaware)

And now 787s in the US are grounded as well.

This reminds me of the grounding of the DC-10 fleet many years ago. With that there were lives and hull losses. None of us would want to think what would happen if we were half way to HNL when the battery starts to flame.

Years ago, I imagined thinking that with all those new DC-10’s now just sitting on the ground was it now their destiny to be tuned back into ingots of aluminum?

I went out and bought all the Douglas stock I could lay my hands on and margined it too. 30 days later I was handsomely rewarded.

It sure seems to be a battery problem and not an airplane design issue. Does this equal a scratched window or sticky fuel valve? Do I have to answer this question? Only the reporters have stupid and opportunistic tattooed on their forehead.

Short term fix: NiCad’s, Long term fix: new battery design, 787 effects NONE if not enhanced.
