Boeing Posts 8 787 Cancellations in March but books 32 orders

Boeing released their monthly order and delivery totals for March and while the expected orders from Bank of China (BOC) and Turkish Airlines showed up there was a surprise cancellation.  Norwegian Air cancelled 6 787-9 thus their total 787-9 ordered went from 19 to 13 with 6 already delivered and 4 airplanes scheduled for final assembly over the next 9 months or so.  The other 2 cancellations came from China Development Bank.

The 787-8 is staging a little bit of an orders come back with the 22 -8s ordered by American Airlines this month, Boeing also booked 1 787-8 from an unidentified customer in March.

Boeing total order book (including the American Air order) stands at 1,365 with 441 x 787-8 (350 delivered and 91 backlog); 753 x 787-9 (320 delivered and 433 backlog); 171 x 787-10 ordered (1 delivered, 170 backlog).  These numbers are as of April 10 but does not include any April deliveries.

  1. Love to see it soar above 1400 when Emirates and Hawaiian orders get finalized. .

  2. Not sure they are actual cancellations. If you read the fine print, Boeing has adjusted its accounting practices to reflect ASC 606. These 10 orders are probably deemed options or MOUs under ASC 606 hence why they were moved off books. By no means is there indications at this stage that Norwegian and CDB actually cancelled their commitments.

  3. Slight correction - you said 1 delivered 787-10. SIA has two.

  4. I think I've read somewhere that the Norwegian orders have simply been "switched" to BOC...plus 6 and minus 6?

  5. A little off topic, but anyone know whether the SIA 10s are configured with a crew rest area above the cabin? If not, how long a flight can they do without one?

  6. I’ve read on a blog that the 787-8 afterbody fabrication has now been brought into conformance that of the 787-9 and 10 (except for length, of course). Do you know if this is true?

  7. The continued investment in wringing cost out of 788 assembly/test/delivery puts the lie to those who have declared that variant to be a drag on B's financial results.

  8. It seems deliveries might be delayed as Boeing diverts engines to B788's with faulty RR Trent 1000 engines to get them back in the air. The aviation press has reports the FAA is about to issue an Airworthiness Directive limiting ETOPS to 60 minutes for a/c with these engines that have flown more than 300 cycles.

  9. Uresh, any idea on timing for the next firing order update?

  10. HI Uresh - how about a blog post on how Boeing is updating the 787-8 to achieve more commonality with the 787-9? Fairly significant development.

  11. Already working on something like that.

  12. Uresh, Do you think Oman Air will buy more 787-9 since it has already established a fleet of 787's or do you think Airbus can squeeze in some A350 orders to replace Oman older A-330's?

  13. They may go with more 787s since it’s already established in their fleet and Boeing’s g will make them a deal they can’t refuse.

  14. You have done a great job of keeping us informed on the 787 program. I have been used to variable numbers starting with ZA being for the 787-8, and ZB for the 787-9, and ZC for the 787-10. Now I see a new code, ZE, occasionally popping up in the tables. What is that?
ZE 001 LN 704 for Aeromexico
ZE 013 LN 710 for LOT Polish
ZE 003 LN 741 for ANA
ZE 031 LN 747 for Hainan
ZE 040 LN 792 for Westjet
ZE 165 LN 805 for Supama
ZE 041 LN 810 for Westjet
ZE 042 LN 815 for Westjet
    Please enlighten me!
    thanks for all your work!!

  20. Any insight to what is going on with JAL LN690. Saw that it flew to PAE this afternoon and has had a lot of test flights?

  21. Do you have knowledge for LN688 (Air China) delay to the end of November?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Might be due to the Roll Royce Trent 1000 issues.

  23. Looks like Qantas just ordered another 6 787-9s to replace the last of the 747s

  24. Uresh, could you provide some clarification on LN 652? It appears it rolled out in November as a Royal Jordanian aircraft and returned from painting in Portland on May 2nd as a Uzbekistan Airways aircraft. Has ownership changed between rollout and painting?
Thanks for your continuing good work on the 787 program.

  27. Hello, Uresh-
Do you know what kind of testing is going on for LN 690, a 787-9 for Japan Airlines? It has made 22 test flights and many of the flight patterns do not look like normal pre delivery test flights.
    thanks,

  28. This website: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xPZP2NmigprVBd5dklYcFOGraAn4C8Z4W0z2TPD-eD0/edit?pref=2&pli=1#gid=0 shows the many JAL flights as "engineering" activities. I presume for JAL purposes.

  32. Is the Rolls Royce engine AD affecting production flow? Are the airlines requesting the upgraded engines be sent to the field rather than the factory floor?
