Air India 787 deliveries put on hold...again

It seems that 787 deliveries to Air India are on hold.....again.  Apparently Air India is in the middle of a a "tussle" between the Indian Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.  They whole debacle has scuttled the bridge financing needed to pay for the 787 purchases (later to be paid back when Air India arranges a sale-lease back agreement with another party).

The carrier has issued a new RFP for bridge financing.  In the meantime look for Boeing Charleston to be turned into a a 78 parking lot as 787 for Air India, China Southern and Hainan Airlines take up all the available parking stalls at the facility (there are currently 8 stalls for 787s).  There are 9 787s that are built, will be built or in production there and all of them are for the aforementioned carriers with a 10th at Ft. Worth being painted.

Given this information I'm revising my delivery expectation downward by another three aircraft. I expect Boeing will deliver 14 more 787s by the end of December for a total of 44 787s for 2012 and 47 deliveries since the program started delivering in 2011.

Between the two assembly locations and the three airlines, there are 22 total airframes (thus far) that are assembled, going through assembly or will be assembled that are affected by the issues with the CAAC and the Indian Government.  Unsurprisingly, it is the governmental entities of India and China (a tribute to Socialism) that are being the barriers to delivery.

  1. Poor Charleston workers. You'd think Boeing would give them a United/ANA/JA/LAN/Ethiopian airframe or two to build for the sake of morale.

I still don't understand how Boeing can give so many priority spots to flaky airlines while leaving them with so much leverage. I guess the Boeing delays didn't help, but I'd think you'd demand full payment upfront from these guys. Then, if you want to let your planes sit around in storage while your sclerotic governments waste time and money, fine by us.

  2. Neither Boeing nor Airbus (nor any other manufacturer of a large durable good like airplanes) can demand 100% up front payment from anyone. The companies are paid progress payments as the aircraft is going through the production process with the last (and largest) payment due upon delivery. Boeing (and Airbus) have not had problems in selling and delivering to these airlines in the past and there's no indication that they would be giving these kinds of problems now so it's not Boeing's fault.

  3. Yeah good point. All this nonsense seemed to ramp up with the 787.

I still think Boeing should act more like a Ferrari dealer. Only sell new planes to customers that have bought 2-3 used ones from them, and then demand 130% list price, cash up front... :p

  5. Looks like QTR ZA460 delivered with only one customer flight after two Boeing flights and QTR4 ZA463 went to customer after one Boeing flight but took three customer flights to deliver--some airplanes are just "cleaner" than others.

Relative to hull losses for the 777, there have been two, depending on how you count them--no loss of life in either. BAB in Jan 2008 when it ran out of fuel on short final and EGP in 2011 from a cockpit fire at the gate. Add to that two early line numbers that have been "scrapped" and you have four hulls down in less than 18 years.

  9. What airlines are expecting to receive 787s in 2013?

What frame do you expect to enter the EMC after LN59 comes out?

Can you see the Chinese 787s in the KPAE flightline photos?

  10. Let Boeing repaint these airplanes and sell them to people who really want them and can pay for them.
I'm sure our friends at UAL, ANA and JAL would gladly take the planes and begin using them for the benefit of their travellers.

  11. Flightaware had a report (http://www.airlinesanddestinations.com/more/construction-of-british-airways-first-boeing-787-begins/) of British Airways' first 787 is now beginning construction. I don't see BA anywhere on your Production/Disposition sheet through LN100. Any idea what they're reporting?

    1. They're talking about fuselage sections and sub assemblies from Tier 1 suppliers not final assblu. BA isn't getting theirs till May next
Year so they still have a ways to go.

    1. I won't be listing LN 101 to LN 110 until nextonth as the firing order usually changes.

  16. Maybe the firing order will be adjusted to reflect frames that can be more readily delivered vs being parked.

  17. Hey guys I am trying to make a 787-8 scale model to develop into a RC plane and I started with some free hand drawing. Now I have downloaded and printed Boeing's CAD of the 787-8 so I can begin drawing it to scale. I might change my name soon and start a blog on the progress of it.

  20. Uresh,
I see that a B787 filed from BFI to IAH as UA 7708. Was LN50 delivered to United ?
    Thanks for your insight.

  21. JA817A should be ANA/59 not ANA/83.
ANA/83 is expected to be JA818A and appears to be at the fuel dock still unpainted.

this news piece states that Qatar has already taken delivery of three Dreamliners, one of which will be transferred to VCV only next week for the IFE works.

    1. The article doesn't state that. It says that 2 have been delivered with a third to follow next week. Boeing has confirmed to me that only 2 787s have been delivered to Qatar.
